Holiday Hosting Drain & Disposal Checklist
The week around Thanksgiving is the busiest of our year for drain calls, and almost all of it comes down to four ingredients and one habit.
The short answer
Keep four things out of the drain: grease and cooking oil, starchy foods like potato peels and pasta, fibrous vegetables like celery and corn husks, and coffee grounds and eggshells. Run cold water — not hot — before, during and for fifteen seconds after the disposal, and feed it gradually rather than packing it full.
The week around Thanksgiving is reliably the busiest of our year for drain calls, and the reason is arithmetic: a kitchen designed for four people is suddenly serving twelve, and everything that normally trickles down the line arrives at once.

The four things that cause most holiday clogs
1. Grease and cooking oil
The biggest one by a wide margin. Turkey drippings, bacon fat, oil from frying. It goes down warm and liquid, then cools and solidifies on the pipe wall — especially fast on a line running under a slab where the pipe stays cool year-round.
Running hot water after it does not help; it just moves the grease further down the line to solidify somewhere less accessible.
Instead: pour grease into a can or jar, let it solidify, and throw it in the trash. Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before they go in the sink.
2. Starchy foods
Potato peels, pasta, rice. Starch expands and forms a paste that a disposal cannot break down, and it coats the pipe wall like glue. Potato peels in particular are a disposal's worst enemy.
3. Fibrous vegetables
Celery, corn husks, artichoke leaves, onion skins. The fibers wrap around the disposal impellers and jam them, and what does get through knits together in the trap.
4. Coffee grounds and eggshells
Despite the persistent myth that eggshells sharpen disposal blades — disposals do not have blades — both settle in the trap and build sediment. Coffee grounds are particularly good at forming a dense sludge.
How to actually use a garbage disposal
- 1Run cold water, not hot. Cold keeps fats solid so they get chopped and flushed rather than coating the pipe downstream.
- 2Turn the water on before the disposal, and leave it running for fifteen to twenty seconds after the grinding stops.
- 3Feed it gradually rather than packing it full and switching it on.
- 4Small amounts of soft food scraps only. A disposal is a convenience for what is left on a plate, not a waste processor for a holiday meal.
The rest of the house
- Guest bathroom. Check that the toilet flushes strongly and the sink drains at full volume. A slow guest bath drain that nobody uses normally becomes very noticeable with twelve people in the house.
- Toilet paper only. Wipes marketed as flushable are the most common single cause of holiday toilet blockages, regardless of what the package claims. Put a small covered bin in every bathroom and the problem disappears.
- Water heater capacity. Six consecutive showers on Thanksgiving morning will find the limit of a 40-gallon tank. Stagger them, and if this is a recurring frustration, it is a sizing conversation rather than a fault.

If something backs up mid-holiday
- 1Stop using water everywhere in the house if more than one fixture is affected. That means the dishwasher too.
- 2Do not reach for a chemical drain opener. It will not clear a real blockage, and it turns the standing water into a hazard for whoever opens the line.
- 3A plunger on a single slow sink is fine. A plunger on a main line backup is not going to accomplish anything.
- 4If a disposal hums but does not turn, switch it off, and use the hex wrench in the bottom of the unit to free the impeller — the wrench is usually taped to the side or in the manual.
