Gas water heaters
- Look through the sight glass at the bottom of the tank. Is the pilot lit? If it went out, follow the lighting instructions on the label — if it lights and dies within a minute, that is a thermocouple and you need us.
- Confirm the gas shutoff at the heater is in line with the pipe, and that other gas appliances in the house are working.

Electric water heaters
- Check the breaker. A water heater breaker can look closed but be tripped — flip it fully off, then on.
- Pop the upper access panel, fold back the insulation and look for a red reset button. If it has tripped, pressing it may restore hot water — but a high-limit trip means something caused it, and if it trips again, stop and call.
